It’s 8:24, Atlanta — Gary McKee Is Back On The Air

Good morning, morning! Pull the covers back, put the coffee on, and turn it up.

If you grew up anywhere within range of an Atlanta radio between 1971 and 1989, you didn’t really need an alarm clock. You had Gary McKee. Traffic, weather, Red Neckerson, Willis the Guard, and a man who could make a Tuesday feel like a Friday — on 790 WQXI and 94Q, with a fifth of the entire city listening at his peak. Nobody in this town has come close since.

We lost Gary this past March, at 81. The tapes didn’t go anywhere.

They did move, though. The audio now lives over at Dueling History, along with the rest of what’s been coming out of the archives — the bits, the games, the odd corners of the past that don’t fit anywhere else. Far Side of History isn’t going anywhere either, but that’s where the good stuff is landing these days.
